In the heart of Puglia, between the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto, lies the Itria Valley, the valley of the trulli. Gentle hollows and cultivated hillocks, a dense scattering of trulli and masserie, and fields bounded by dry-stone walls and dotted with centuries-old olive trees come together in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy.<\/p>\n

It is a place where whitewashed villages such as Ostuni, Cisternino, Alberobello, Martina Franca and Locorotondo offer images and emotions you will not forget. In historic centres of lime-washed houses, among Baroque palaces, hidden courtyards and flagstoned lanes, you can still breathe the atmosphere of times gone by; and the food, the wine, the light and the scents change with the seasons.<\/p>\n

How to Get There and When to Come<\/h2>\n

The Itria Valley can be reached from the airports of Bari-Palese (about 70 km, one hour by car) and Brindisi-Casale (about 40 km, 40 minutes). A car is all but essential to explore the area freely, move between the villages and reach the beaches of the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, both easily accessible.<\/p>\n

The best period runs from May to October, with high season concentrated between June and September. Those seeking peace and mild temperatures will find the ideal moment in May-June and September-October: the villages are less crowded, the colours of the countryside are at their best, and you can enjoy everything at a more relaxed pace.<\/p>\n

Every village has its own personality. Cisternino is rural and intimate, Ostuni majestic and open to the sea, Alberobello is the UNESCO-listed capital of the trulli, Martina Franca is the city of Baroque art and music, and Locorotondo is a perfect circle of white houses overlooking the valley. And then there are the lesser-known villages: Ceglie Messapica, the gastronomic capital; San Michele Salentino, the agricultural heart of the area; Fasano, gateway to the coast.<\/p>\n

To experience everyday Puglia, the weekly markets are not to be missed: Monday in Cisternino, Tuesday in Monopoli, Wednesday in Fasano and Martina Franca, Saturday in Ostuni. The atmosphere is that of a real Levantine bazaar, where fruit, vegetables, cheeses and local products mingle with stalls of clothing, shoes and goods of every kind. For antiques, head to Ostuni on the second Sunday of the month, to Cisternino and Martina Franca on the third, and to Ceglie Messapica on the last.<\/p>\n

Cisternino<\/h2>\n

Almost an Oriental village, with its gleaming white houses, hidden courtyards and a tangle of lanes that invite you to get lost. Cisternino is the most rural and intimate of the towns in the Itria Valley, and perhaps the most loved by those who discover it for the first time. But it is in the butchers’ shops of the centre, with their ever-lit grills where meat is cooked in full view, that you discover the most authentic soul of the town.<\/p>\n

Ostuni, the White City<\/h2>\n

Set on three hills and overlooking a green-silver carpet of olive trees, Ostuni is perhaps the most iconic village in Puglia. It was Greek, Lombard, Norman, French and Aragonese, and within its turreted walls the historic centre is a gleaming white maze of lanes, stairways, Baroque palaces and workshops that climbs to the fifteenth-century cathedral with its famous 24-ray rose window.<\/p>\n

Ostuni is also the gateway to the finest beaches in the area, with the Adriatic coast just a few kilometres away. For those staying in the trulli of the surrounding countryside, the town offers a lively evening scene with restaurants, wine bars and village festivals. Seven of our homes are in the Ostuni area, from Casa Madam\u00ec<\/a> for couples and small families to Trulli Due Mari<\/a> for groups of up to ten people.<\/p>\n

Ceglie Messapica<\/h2>\n

Known as the gastronomic capital of the Itria Valley, Ceglie Messapica is the village where you eat best of all. Less touristy than Ostuni and Alberobello, it preserves an authenticity that its more famous neighbours are slowly losing. The historic centre, dominated by the Norman-Swabian castle, is a maze of lanes where every trattoria has its own recipe for orecchiette and every butcher his own secret for bombette.<\/p>\n

The countryside around Ceglie is particularly rich in trulli and masserie. Here you will find eight of our homes, including Trulli Tenuta Olivi<\/a> with its large swimming pool set in a five-hectare olive grove, and Villa Trulli Monte Gobbo<\/a>, which can sleep up to fourteen people.<\/p>\n

San Michele Salentino<\/h2>\n

A small farming village in the heart of the area, San Michele Salentino is the ideal place for those seeking the absolute calm of the Apulian countryside without giving up proximity to the main destinations. Ostuni is ten kilometres away, and the Torre Guaceto marine reserve, with its white-sand beaches, less than twenty.<\/p>\n

It is a perfect base for exploring the whole Itria Valley: six of our homes are located here, including the pair Trullo Bella Vita Deluxe<\/a> and Comfort<\/a> (two different options on the same property) and Trulli Paradiso<\/a> with its private pool.<\/p>\n

Alberobello, the Capital of the Trulli<\/h2>\n

It was here that the lime-painted building with a conical roof of chiancarelle (limestone slabs), called the trullo, was born. More than a thousand trulli, packed close together, form a real town that was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1996. Alberobello is an essential stop on any trip to Puglia, but our advice is to visit it early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the organised groups have left and the lanes can breathe again.<\/p>\n

Martina Franca<\/h2>\n

Once a town of nobles and brigands, Martina Franca is one of the most elegant cities in Puglia. Its late-Baroque historic centre, with the Ducal Palace and fa\u00e7ades adorned with friezes and putti, hosts the Festival della Valle d’Itria every summer, a prestigious international opera festival. But Martina Franca is also synonymous with good food: the excellent capocollo martinese, a cured, flavourful cold cut, is a product that alone is worth a stop.<\/p>\n

In the Martina Franca area there are four of our homes, including Trullo Meraviglie<\/a> and Trullo di Marella<\/a>, a short walk from each other in a strategic position at the crossroads of the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto.<\/p>\n

Locorotondo<\/h2>\n

Perched on the top of a hill, Locorotondo owes its name to the perfectly circular layout of the town. It is a gleaming white village of tall, narrow houses with pitched roofs, a feature unique to the area, and concentric streets converging towards the centre. Beyond its architectural beauty, Locorotondo is famous for its wines: the Locorotondo DOC white is one of the best whites in Puglia.<\/p>\n

We recommend reaching Locorotondo along the provincial road from Martina Franca: the view of the roundness of the village, lit by the late-afternoon sun, is one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Valley. Fasano and the Coast<\/h2>\n

Fasano marks the northern edge of the Itria Valley and is the gateway to the Adriatic coast. It is the ideal choice for those who want to combine the trullo experience with proximity to the sea: some of our homes here are just a few kilometres from the beach.<\/p>\n
