My husband didn\u2019t want to go on honeymoon<\/strong>, as summer is on its way and he reckons we can have a beach holiday<\/strong> instead. Well I never \u2013 if he\u2019s going to be that heartless, he can forget me ironing his shirts; now that we\u2019re married, each husband will just have to pull his weight. And if that doesn\u2019t work, then there\u2019ll be no more cuddles at bedtime.<\/p>\n

So anyway, today he asked:<\/p>\n

Darling, shall we go to England?<\/p>\n

What? I nearly choked on my dainty glass of iced orgeat. How about somewhere a teeny bit warmer?<\/p>\n

Sitges?<\/p>\n

No Silvio, I\u2019d rather stay here in Italy, there are so many wonderful places around.<\/p>\n

Would you like to go to Taormina, Claudio? That\u2019s where our love story began.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s where it\u2019ll end too if you don\u2019t stop torturing that lovely linen tablecloth, can\u2019t you see you\u2019re creasing the poor thing to death? I like the idea of southern Italy, I could really do with some prickly pears and beaches, wow! Let\u2019s go to Gallipoli<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Gallipoli? But you never want to go there because you reckon that\u2019s where all our friends go!<\/p>\n

Well now I do! I\u2019ve found some places to stay<\/strong> that are definitely gay-friendly<\/strong>. Down South they pretend not to notice, but they know when they\u2019re onto a good thing.<\/p>\n

OK, let\u2019s go for the pearl of the Ionian<\/strong>: Gallipoli is just up the road from Lecce<\/strong> and we could arrange a trip there too.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s Punta della Suina<\/strong>, a breathtaking beach that looks as if it could be in the Maldives. I imagine myself stretched out on our new beach towel.<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t that the beach where Ferzan \u00d6zpetek <\/strong>shot the famous dance scene in the sea in Loose Cannons<\/em><\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Yes, that\u2019s the one!<\/p>\n

I\u2019d prefer a rockier coastline though; let\u2019s go to Santa Maria al Bagno<\/strong> to do some snorkelling<\/strong>, it\u2019s got a spectacular sea floor.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s alternate then, one day of sand, one day of rocks, my love, ok? I smile.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the Angevin-Aragonese<\/strong> Castle <\/strong>and the characteristic old town <\/strong>with its beach of Purity<\/strong>, the Cathedral of Sant\u2019Agata<\/strong>, which those in the know call a \u201csupreme expression of Baroque architecture\u201d, the Greek fountain<\/strong> on the brickwork bridge between new town and old. And we simply must go to the Church of San Francesco d\u2019Assisi <\/strong>with its statue to the Impenitent Thief<\/strong>, who carried on mocking Christ while being crucified alongside him. This wooden statue is quite a little masterpiece, you know!<\/p>\n

Yes, yes, of course, but we have to get a tan too, I don\u2019t want to go back to work the colour of asses\u2019 milk! And we simply must go for a trip to Sant’Andrea Island<\/strong>, where the pine forest is a wilderness of nature\u2019s finest perfumes.<\/p>\n

Love it, he answers with a satisfied grin.<\/p>\n

And I can\u2019t wait to try the famous Scapece<\/strong>, that dish of small fried fish with breadcrumbs softened in yellow saffron. And lu Purpu alla pignata<\/strong>, the octopus dish with potatoes cooked in tomato sauce in an ancient terracotta pot.<\/p>\n

But of course, my love, just as long as we can wash it down with a fine Malvasia<\/strong>. That\u2019s the stuff. And we’ll go dancing at the Picador<\/strong>, of course, after we\u2019ve popped into the Led Caf\u00e9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We could also do with a bit of relaxation though.<\/p>\n

Of course, darling, and you\u2019ll see, if you stay in one of those trulli with a swimming pool set in an olive grove<\/strong>, beneath the stars I\u2019ll give you a massage you won\u2019t forget as long as you have breath in your sweet body. Ah, how wonderful it is to be married. Whoever said marriage is the tomb of love?<\/p>\n
