{"id":33665,"date":"2017-09-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/the-fires-of-grottaglie\/"},"modified":"2020-06-19T22:13:14","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T20:13:14","slug":"the-fires-of-grottaglie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/en\/the-fires-of-grottaglie\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fires of Grottaglie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I reckon nothing will be happening tonight, because she\u2019s not deigning to look at me.\u00a0 But to see her here in the <strong>cave workshop<\/strong> in the <strong>pottery district<\/strong>, surrounded by dust, washing her brushes with her neckline open uncovering the outline of her breasts, I can\u2019t resist, I can\u2019t even look at her without touching.<\/p>\n<p>I want to caress those breasts like I do the <strong>clay<\/strong> on the <strong>wheel<\/strong> before starting to turn it, it\u2019s all in the contact and perception, testing its texture with my fingers and shaping it in my hands; when it comes to\u00a0<span class='tipso' data-tipso='Pumi or Pomi: ceramic objects shaped like buds surrounded by three acanthus leaves symbolizing the rebirth of nature. They are given to people as lucky charms. '><strong>pumi<\/strong><\/span> I\u2019m a past master.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>former oil mill<\/strong> is where my grandfather conceived my father, and I have to live up to his name; my own children will smell of clay and tradition, and it will be in their own offspring\u2019s blood to want to create <strong>dishes<\/strong> and <span class='tipso' data-tipso='Jar-like containers similar to flagons, used in Puglia to contain wine, oil, dried figs and olives.'><strong>capase<\/strong><\/span>; because here in Grottaglie we make love with red clay powder in our mouths, with the\u00a0<span class='tipso' data-tipso='This crystalline glaze is a transparent vitreous coating applied to a ceramic object.'><strong>cristallina<\/strong><\/span> mixed in with our hair and sweat, and everything becomes more archaic, as if we were all one with the <strong>pottery<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Chiara is choosing which brushes to use for the floral decorations on her single-fired dishes, but then she realizes they\u2019re still hot, like my blood.<\/p>\n<p>I walk up to her, take in the fragrance of her neck, perfectly set off by her tied-up hair, white like the pottery that abounds here. That\u2019s what these <strong>workshops<\/strong> are like: on one side we have immaculate white <strong>dishes<\/strong>, <strong>glasses<\/strong>, <strong>pots <\/strong>and <strong>money boxes<\/strong>, and on the other a triumph of different colours and shapes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pumi<\/strong> are hand-painted, pommel-shaped <strong>lucky charms<\/strong> to protect us against evil, which is why we used them to decorate our balconies. They\u2019re our pride and joy, having been exported as far afield as America, because <strong>Apulian pottery<\/strong> cannot be mistaken for any other style.<\/p>\n<p>Here we make <strong>ceramics for daily use <\/strong>in sludge green, manganese blue and ochre yellow, as well as <strong>ornamental pottery<\/strong>, the so-called <strong><em>bianchi di Grottaglie <\/em><\/strong>(whites of Grottaglie), which we also call <strong><em>roba bianca<\/em><\/strong> (white stuff), which we glaze with white\u00a0<span class='tipso' data-tipso='Tin-bearing. In ceramics, in order to obtain an enamelled product, a coat of typical white stanniferous enamel would be applied. '>stanniferous enamel<\/span> which helps the pure form of the ornaments and tiles stand out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-238 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ceramica-coppia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"769\" height=\"418\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve checked the kiln temperature, a much easier job than when my grandfather wood-fired his pots, where I\u2019m refiring some <strong>jugs<\/strong>. If they come out like I wanted, I\u2019d love to take one to the <strong>Castello Episcopio<\/strong>which houses the <strong>Ceramic Museum<\/strong>, or else I&#8217;ll take it to the <strong>pottery exhibition<\/strong> we hold every year in August.
