Locorotondo\u2019s old town has recently become a member of an exclusive club, <strong>I borghi pi\u00f9 belli d\u2019Italia<\/strong> (<em>Italy<\/em>\u2019<em>s most beautiful town centres<\/em>) and has also been awarded the <strong>Touring Club Italiano<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Orange Flag<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After we\u2019d taken a look at <strong>Palazzo Morelli<\/strong> and <strong>Madonna della Greca <\/strong>(<em>Our Lady of Greca<\/em>), the oldest church in town, Mummy and I went for a stroll along what they jokingly call the seafront (or \u201c<strong>Lungomare<\/strong>\u201d), overlooking the <strong>Itria Valley<\/strong> \u2013 though, truth be told, you can sometimes make out the sea in the distance. At the bottom of the slopes, we noticed red roses growing among the <strong>black grapevines<\/strong>, against a backdrop of <strong>trulli<\/strong>, <strong>olive trees<\/strong> and <strong>masserias<\/strong>. It was such beautiful scenery that it almost seemed to bring a tear to Mummy\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Daddy wanted to photograph the <strong><em>cummerse<\/em><\/strong> houses with their dry sloping roofs, so he stayed back in the little alleyways, which in the evenings suddenly fill up with tables where we go to enjoy the <strong>typical local cuisine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s so beautiful when she smiles, enchanted by the vines. Just then, along came Daddy, looking very pleased with himself for managing to get himself into the <strong>Clock Tower<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/locorotondo-paese-del-vino-scorcio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He asked if we wanted to <strong>help with the grape harvest<\/strong>, as he\u2019d discovered Locorotondo\u2019s <strong>\u201cVendemmia in terrazza\u201d<\/strong> (Harvesting on the Terrace) association, which gives tourists the chance to pick grapes alongside the locals. She was so excited, that we literally ran all the way down; Daddy started chatting to a winegrower who kindly went over what we needed to do, handed us some tools, and found us a place to start between the trellises. There was a nice mix of <strong>Locorotondians<\/strong> and <strong>tourists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Mummy tied a scarf round her head and almost caressed the bunches off the vine, while Daddy tried to imitate the locals with their quick, confident, snipping movement. I wasn\u2019t allowed to use the secateurs, so I transported the bunches in smaller buckets. And that\u2019s how I bumped into C\u00e9cile, a young French girl.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/locorotondo-paese-del-vino-vendemmia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was transfixed by the <strong>luscious bunches<\/strong> and the <strong>red roses<\/strong> that decorate but \u2013 most importantly \u2013 which protect the vine against attack from parasites, which is why they\u2019re called <strong>early warning systems<\/strong>. The winegrower told us he makes the grapes into <strong><em>primitivo<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>white<\/strong>, and <strong>sweet<\/strong> wines.<\/p>\n<p>It was just beautiful and Mummy was overflowing with joy; I even saw her hugging Daddy and they looked just so happy together. <strong>Locorotondo<\/strong> and this holiday here in <strong>Puglia<\/strong> have brought peace back into the family.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, tonight there\u2019s going to be a party at one of those lovely old masserias where apparently we\u2019re going to be meeting C\u00e9cile. So there\u2019s only one thing for it \u2013 I\u2019m definitely going to give her a kiss on the cheek, as well as a puppet I bought her in a <strong>handicraft shop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/locorotondo-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They tell me we\u2019re going to stay until the <strong>Feast of San Rocco<\/strong>, so that we can enjoy the area\u2019s most ancient <strong>fireworks contest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And I want to follow <strong>Diana<\/strong>, the band that wends its way through the streets in the early morning to announce that the feast has begun, and then in the evening we can have a little stroll beneath the <strong>beautiful illuminations<\/strong>.
