In Puglia<\/strong>, over the Christmas holidays<\/strong>, cribs <\/strong>come alive, the statues replaced by amateur actors who bring the Nativity<\/strong> scenes to life, creating a magical atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Scenery is created that harks back to the time of ancient Bethlehem<\/strong>, with glimpses of everyday life in a stunning blend of tradition<\/strong>, folklore<\/strong>, sacredness<\/strong> and mystery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From the Gargano <\/strong>peninsula in the north, to the central Valle d’Itria<\/strong>, all the way down to the Salento <\/strong>peninsula on the heel, enchanting locations <\/strong>such as old city centres<\/strong>, karst caves<\/strong>, disused oil mills<\/strong>, renaissance palaces<\/strong> and farmsteads <\/strong>throughout Puglia embrace visitors in the warmth of Nativity scenes, while festive food and drink<\/strong> also play their part in making it an experience to remember.<\/p>\n

Living nativity scenes <\/strong>are mainly set in picturesque old town centres, sometimes using theatrical backdrops. Stroll through the alleyways overflowing with craft workshops<\/strong> \u2013 some purposely set up for the occasion, others still in business \u2013 that preserve the traces of the work of yesteryear, enabling us to rediscover ancient crafts <\/strong>such as those of the farrier<\/strong>, the knife grinder<\/strong>, the basket maker<\/strong>, the weaver<\/strong>, while farmers\u2019 wives<\/strong> knead dough into bread or shape it into the famous orecchiette<\/em><\/strong> pasta and taralli<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Bari <\/strong>province, for example, in Alberobello<\/strong>, more than 200 costumed figures accompany visitors along narrow streets lit by oil lamps, as they act out scenes from popular theatre, providing a great opportunity to discover the territory and its Christmas specialities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Polignano a Mare<\/strong>, a Nativity scene is recreated in the charming old city towering above the waves. Meanwhile, Valenzano<\/strong> sets up Jerusalem market<\/strong> and Herod\u2019s Palace<\/strong>, through which a procession of the Magi on horseback<\/strong> is led to the Holy Family<\/strong>\u2019s rude stable, by shepherds<\/strong> and their flocks<\/strong>, with ox<\/strong> and ass<\/strong>, angels in adoration<\/strong> and figures in traditional ancient Judean costumes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Up north in Foggia<\/strong> province, against the backdrop of the small hilltop town of Biccari<\/strong>, a living nativity scene is played out in ancient wine cellars<\/strong> and grain warehouses<\/strong>, where visitors can taste typical dishes based on cheese<\/strong>, polenta<\/em><\/strong> and pettole<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Just round the corner from the jewel that is Ostuni<\/strong>, the hamlet of Pezze di Greco <\/strong>puts on a highly original living Nativity scene, with scrupulous attention to historical detail, part of an ongoing project for the Museo della civilt\u00e0 contadina<\/strong> (Rural Life Centre).<\/p>\n

In the province of Taranto<\/strong>, the Vallone <\/em>karst caves <\/strong>close to Crispiano <\/strong>are where Puglia\u2019s most famous living Nativity scene unfolds.<\/p>\n

In Lecce<\/strong> province, on the hill known as Monte Orco<\/strong> near the town of Tricase<\/strong>, a huge Nativity scene<\/strong> takes place over an area of four hectares, where costumed figures act out their roles in a natural setting, recreating a historical atmosphere watched over by Roman soldiers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
