The Putignano Carnival <\/strong>expresses my very essence, because I was born right in the middle of a masquerade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Italy\u2019s longest-lasting carnival<\/strong>, one of the oldest anywhere in Europe<\/strong>, starts on the 26th December<\/strong>, St. Stephen\u2019s Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a succession of pure fun<\/strong> and satire<\/strong>, processions<\/strong> and parades<\/strong> in a continuous fusion of the sacred<\/strong> and the profane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPap\u00e0<\/em>, Grandma told me that when she was young she used to go dancing at carnival parties<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Laura laughs, and the hat I\u2019m making for her starts to slip off her head. \u201cShe told me they had so much fun at those parties, and she went along even when she was pregnant. Is that true?\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThat must be why I like dancing so much, your grandmother danced away with me in her tummy for nine months; I was born in February, remember?\u201d<\/p>\n

My daughter looks at me in amusement and surprise, and I realise it’s hard for her to imagine her grandmother dancing with a fat belly.<\/p>\n

I like carnival<\/strong>, I always used to love dressing up<\/strong> as Farinella.<\/p>\n

\u201cPap\u00e0<\/em>, my favourite Carnival character is Farinella<\/strong>. I saw the photos in your album – weren\u2019t you about the same age as me?\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Laura. So that\u2019s why you wanted me to make you the hat, is it?\u201d.<\/p>\n

She smiles sheepishly, and I hold her tight, breathing in the vanilla perfume she sprays on her neck.<\/p>\n

Farinella is the symbol<\/strong> of the Putignano Carnival<\/strong>. He\u2019s named after Putignano\u2019s most symbolic dish<\/strong>: flour (or farina<\/em> in Italian) made by roasting chickpeas and barley, and then finely crushing them into flour with a pestle and mortar. This farinella <\/em>was once the staple diet for many farming families.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy, why has his hat got three points with bells on?\u201d. Laura\u2019s unbridled curiosity seems limitless today.<\/p>\n

So I tell her it\u2019s a mix between Harlequin and a Jester, with a \u201cskirt\u201d in red and blue \u2013 the official colours of the city \u2013 while his three-pronged hat symbolizes the hills on which Putignano stands.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m enjoying myself, because it\u2019s taking me back in time to when I was the most mockingly sardonic Farinella of all during the parades of allegorical floats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy teacher told us they\u2019re expecting even bigger crowds this year\u201d.<\/p>\n

She screams, unable to keep still so excited is she.<\/p>\n

Yes, thousands of visitors<\/strong> come to the Putignano Carnival from all over Italy and elsewhere, and not just to admire the beauty of the allegorical floats, true works of art<\/strong> made by master papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 artists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you know that many years ago the puppets on the <\/strong>floats<\/strong> used to be made just with straw and rags?\u201d, I ask her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we studied that it all started in 1394<\/strong>, at the time of the Saracen raids. When the relics of St. Stephen<\/strong> were brought here on 26th December to mark the Feast of the Propagation of the Vines<\/strong>, that the peasants stopped working to join in with the sacred procession and as they danced along and sang away, they improvised satirical verses <\/strong>in the local dialect\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell done, little one!\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an overwhelming sense of fun, with streets full of confetti, a tangible symbol of joy, until Shrove Tuesday<\/strong>, when we all celebrate the funeral of the Carnival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Carnival in Putignano<\/strong> highlights the art of papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9<\/strong>, which reached its peak in the 1950s, when the technique of chicken-wire frames<\/strong> covered in newspaper <\/strong>was improved on with the addition of clay<\/strong>. Today\u2019s more advanced techniques, combined with traditional manual skills, enable the craftsmen to create fantastic allegorical puppets<\/strong>, spitting images of the public figures they lampoon, each equipped with ingenious mechanisms to give them their fascinating movements.<\/p>\n

\u201cPap\u00e0<\/em>, get a move on! The first masked group is on its way!\u201d Can you hear the music?\u201d. And she runs enthusiastically towards the balcony, proud of her costume.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d love to give her a big hug and hold her tight, but it\u2019s time for her to go out and have fun, mingling in with the noisy crowds, living her Carnival to the full. We all need to get out there and share confetti and smiles.<\/p>\n
