Puglia <\/strong>is a region for going on enchanting walks<\/strong> and unforgettable holidays<\/strong>, but it\u2019s also a place of talent<\/strong>, which has a tradition of artisans<\/strong> and artists<\/strong> learning to know and love the various raw materials<\/strong> they use to make their works of art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Now that the latest generation of craftsmen and women are using state-of-the-art techniques, their work has become a significant economic resource for the region.<\/p>\n

Wrought iron<\/strong>, ceramics<\/strong>, papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9<\/strong> and glass<\/strong> are just some of the materials which artists use for their creations.<\/p>\n

Puglia has some great artisans, who make railings<\/strong> for balconies or handrails<\/strong>, candlesticks<\/strong> and wrought iron beds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Artigiani<\/p>\n

Les Pouilles comptent de prestigieux artisans d\u2019art qui r\u00e9alisent tant des garde-corps<\/strong> de\u00a0 balcons ou des mains courantes, <\/strong>que des chandeliers<\/strong> ou des lits<\/strong> en fer forg\u00e9<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Puglia has some great artisans, who make railings<\/strong> for balconies or handrails<\/strong>, candlesticks<\/strong> and wrought iron beds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Grottaglie<\/strong>\u2019s ceramics<\/strong> and Rutigliano<\/strong>\u2019s terracotta whistles<\/strong>, for example, are among the most characteristic symbols of Apulian craftsmanship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9<\/strong> used for the carnival floats<\/strong> or for the statues <\/strong>and Mysteries<\/strong> of the Passion of Christ, are great works of art by masters mainly from around Lecce.<\/p>\n

Canes<\/strong>, a throwback to the rural society of old, when people used to weave wickerwork<\/strong> and rattan<\/strong> baskets<\/strong> and chair seats<\/strong>, are today used to produce bags<\/strong>, lamps<\/strong> and armchairs<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n

Weaving techniques, such as those used by Niky Magnifico<\/strong>, a craft artist who learned them from an uncle and who today teaches them to blind children, working on restyling<\/strong>, combining restoration with the concept of artistic and functional recycling. Under his inspiring Ri-mobile<\/em> project, old furniture and armchairs spring back to life and regain their long-lost beauty.<\/p>\n

\"Artigiani<\/p>\n

Fabrics<\/strong> for embroidered tablecloths<\/strong>, sheets<\/strong>, linen towels<\/strong> and curtains<\/strong> are another range of products that have always characterised Puglia; examples include the embroiderers of Alberobello<\/strong> or the Chiacchierino<\/strong> technique used in Conversano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ancient wool<\/strong> and cotton <\/strong>tradition in the Salento<\/strong> is still alive and kicking in the technique known as fiocco leccese<\/strong> (or Lecce bow), which may be of Saracen<\/strong> origin, with its characteristic crimped surface that distinguishes the famous carpets of Surano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Glass, a ductile material recycled in the capable hands of a great Apulian craftsman, transforming slivers and shards into amazing alchemical lamps:\u00a0Peppino Campanella <\/strong><\/a> from Polignano<\/strong> is an artist with a great affinity for recycling materials, making them into sculpture lamps that have earned him a reputation well beyond our shores.<\/p>\n

Lecce stone<\/strong> has for centuries been the material of choice for craftsmen, for portals<\/strong>, church fa\u00e7ades<\/strong> and buildings<\/strong>, and is now also used for making designer<\/strong> items.<\/p>\n

The Salento <\/strong>was also the birthplace of goldsmith<\/strong> and artist \u00a0Roberta Risolo<\/strong><\/a>, with her deep-rooted connection with her surroundings, reflected in her choice of olive wood<\/strong> to create her wonderful jewellery<\/strong> in her Otranto <\/strong>workshop.<\/p>\n

Or Mesagne<\/strong> artist Adriano Radeglia<\/strong><\/a> who has moved on from figurative painting to working with clay<\/strong>, which in turn inspired her to explore design<\/strong> and sculpture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A lively regional scene, with artists who represent our beloved Puglia<\/strong>, a cultural, tourist and creative resource in the world.<\/p>\n

The desire to experience the environment to the full, to create objects and works of art, helps Apulian artists<\/strong> challenge their preconceptions.
