{"id":33786,"date":"2018-06-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/walking-in-the-dune-costiere-regional-nature-park\/"},"modified":"2018-06-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T22:00:00","slug":"walking-in-the-dune-costiere-regional-nature-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/en\/walking-in-the-dune-costiere-regional-nature-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Walking in the Dune Costiere Regional Nature Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here in <strong>Puglia<\/strong> is an almost uncontaminated place running from <strong>Torre Canne<\/strong> through to <strong>Torre San Leonardo<\/strong>, midway between <strong>Ostuni<\/strong> and <strong>Fasano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Dune Costiere Regional Nature Park<\/strong> is full of environmental diversity: from the sea, proceeding inland, we first reach the <strong>dunes<\/strong>, then the <strong>wetlands<\/strong>, the <strong>fossil dunes<\/strong>, the <strong>lama valleys<\/strong> and the <strong>ancient olive groves<\/strong>. This is the perfect place for nature lovers to go on <strong>walks<\/strong> or <strong>bike rides<\/strong>, enjoy the landscape and be enchanted by the many species of <strong>birds<\/strong> that live here. And during one hike, my friends and I met 17-year-old Marco, who told us all about the place where he lives.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Fiume Morelli <\/strong>wetland area, just inland from the sand dunes behind the <strong>Park<\/strong>\u2019s beaches, has some ponds with fishing facilities. The Morelli river itself is fed by a number of different springs, he kindly informs us. Its waters are slightly saline and acidic.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>fish farming<\/strong> we do here means fishing for <strong>eels<\/strong> and <strong>grey mullet <\/strong>but only in December, when <strong>guided tours<\/strong> are arranged to raise awareness of the need for <strong>sustainable fishing<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This enchanting landscape boasts some rather majestic ancient olive trees, as old as the <strong>Via Traiana<\/strong>, a Roman highroad dating back to the 2nd century AD, which runs the length of the Olivetan valley, past ancient Egnatia, and all the way down to the <strong>columns<\/strong> at the Roman port of Brundisium, or <strong>Brindisi<\/strong> as it is known today.<\/p>\n<p>The ancient olive grove is a <strong>semi-natural environment <\/strong>that has remained intact, an evocative landscape enriched by magnificent <strong>oak trees<\/strong> picturesquely set among <strong>dry stone walls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Hoopoes<\/strong> and <strong>Marsh Harriers<\/strong> are just two of the Mediterranean bird species found here, while the night-time is enlivened by the calls of <strong>Barn <\/strong>and <strong>Little Owls<\/strong>\u201d. And he curls his lips into a whistle that sounds very like a quail. We clap delightedly. \u201cIn the summer, there will be <strong>Goldfinches<\/strong>, <strong>Quails<\/strong> and <strong>Swifts<\/strong>\u201d, as well as specialities such as <strong>Fan-tailed Warblers<\/strong> and <strong>Corn Buntings<\/strong>, he carries on happily.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most characteristic parts of the landscape are <strong>dry river valleys<\/strong> known as <strong><em>lame<\/em><\/strong>, traces of ancient watercourses, such as the one close to <strong>Masseria Pezza Caldara<\/strong>, once used as a <strong>tufa rock<\/strong> quarry.<\/p>\n<p>These lama valleys are full of caves containing finds from ancient cave-dwelling civilizations, such as <strong>underground oil mills and sheepfolds<\/strong>, overlooked by beautiful <strong>fortified <em>masserias <\/em><\/strong>protected by a <strong>tower at each of its four corners<\/strong>. And we were even more amazed when he took us to see some of the caves, with all the authenticity of someone whose knowledge comes from playing there as a child.<\/p>\n<p>There are also numerous places of worship, such as the 12th century <strong>Church of St. Peter<\/strong>, inside <strong>Masseria Ottava Grande<\/strong>, which has traces of frescoes based on <strong>Orthodox iconography<\/strong>. \u201cThis is where my family and I live every summer\u201d, he reveals.<\/p>\n<p>Particular mention should be made of the <strong>Dolmen di Montalbano<\/strong>, a megalithic monument dating back to the Late Stone Age, which stands in the <strong>Pisco Marano<\/strong> district.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Via Traiana <\/strong>made it possible to transport <strong>olive oil <\/strong>to commercial ports in the <strong>Salento peninsula <\/strong>such as Gallipoli, which explains why there are so many oil mills along the way; after falling into disuse for many years, these mills have now been brought back to their former glory, visited by <strong>tourists<\/strong> looking to make the most of every single <strong>excursion<\/strong>, in an emotional exchange with Mother Nature.<\/p>\n<p>As I look at this charming young man, Marco, who has willingly given up some of his time to share a piece of his beautiful Puglia with us, I know I&#8217;m happy to be here.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here in Puglia is an almost uncontaminated place running from Torre Canne through to Torre San Leonardo, midway between Ostuni &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":116,"featured_media":33762,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[131],"tags":[212],"class_list":["post-33786","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destinations-and-itineraries","tag-nature-parks","breadcrumb","wpautop"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<title>Walking in the Dune Costiere Regional Nature Park -
