On the edge of the <strong>Laghi Alimini<\/strong>, that\u2019s one of the best places to find one. I want to lead you down to that heavenly blue water where we can swim, <strong>windsurf<\/strong> and kiss till sunset.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Alimini<\/strong> are two adjacent little lakes, separated only by a canal known locally as <strong><em>Lu Strittu<\/em><\/strong>; a Garden of Eden where I\u2019ll be able to <strong>hug you <\/strong>the whole time as we marvel at the wonders of the <strong>nature reserve <\/strong>which will be the backdrop for our <strong>holiday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The lakes are a few miles north of the <strong>city of Otranto<\/strong>. Take the train to <strong>Lecce<\/strong> and I\u2019ll come and pick you up in the car, so we can enjoy the morning together.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll love the <strong>great lake<\/strong>, because it\u2019s surrounded by a <strong>rocky shoreline<\/strong> swathed in <strong>pine forests<\/strong> and enchanting <strong>Mediterranean maquis scrub<\/strong>. I want to show you the <strong>wetland <\/strong>known as <strong><em>Traguano<\/em><\/strong>, which has several springs \u2013 the main one being <strong><em>Zudrea<\/em><\/strong>, which feeds the lake as well as the sea. There I\u2019ll be able to take photos of you, like a beautiful nymph with your hair all gathered up in that awesome way of yours.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Great Lake <\/strong>is almost as salty as the sea, because some of its water comes from there. However, <strong>Alimini Piccolo <\/strong>is a freshwater lake, also known as <strong><em>Fontanelle<\/em><\/strong>, because it\u2019s fed by the <strong>water table<\/strong> of the <strong>Rio Grande <\/strong>canal.<\/p>\n<p>Around the two lakes, we\u2019ll go looking for a few plant species you\u2019ll love, such as the <strong>marsh orchid <\/strong><em>Anacamptis palustris<\/em>, <strong>water caltrop<\/strong> and an <strong>aquatic bladderwort<\/strong> <em>Utricularia australis<\/em>, practically a carnivorous plant. As you\u2019re so mad on botany, I hope you\u2019ll be as thrilled as me to find some of these plants.<\/p>\n<p>The lakes are also an important habitat for birds \u2013 the biggest migratory species include <strong>white storks<\/strong>, <strong>flamingoes<\/strong>, <strong>cranes<\/strong>, <strong>wild geese<\/strong> and <strong>swans<\/strong>, which have earned the reserve <strong>protected status<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are also plenty of birds of prey, including such amazing species as <strong>booted eagles<\/strong>, <strong>long-eared owls<\/strong>, <strong>barn owls<\/strong> and <strong>little owls<\/strong>. I\u2019m going to take you for an excursion at night, who knows, we might see one of the owls, so if you&#8217;re afraid you can hold on tight to me; I can act like a perfect gentleman even in the dark. Hey, I think I can see a little smile on your face!<\/p>\n<p>The place I\u2019m sure I\u2019m going to be able to win your heart is the highlight of the Alimini lake area \u2013 <strong>Baia dei Turchi<\/strong>, the Bay of the Turks. It takes my breath away, just like you do, it\u2019s wild and uncontaminated, just like you \u2013 you can also only get there on foot, and I know how much you love a good walk. This is where, according to legend, the <strong>Turks<\/strong> disembarked before the <strong>Battle of Otranto<\/strong> during the <strong>15th century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of well-equipped private beaches, which at night turn into amazing <strong>beach clubs<\/strong>. I want to watch you dance the night away.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll go and visit the beautiful <strong>town centre<\/strong>, walk hand in hand through the streets of the <strong>old city<\/strong>, and have an <strong>aperitif<\/strong> in Otranto\u2019s <strong>quaintest bar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You deserve this <strong>holiday<\/strong> and all the laid-back <strong>relaxation<\/strong> <strong>Puglia<\/strong> has to offer, and I will at long last be able once again to hug you and love you nice and close.<\/p>\n<p>Tell me what time your train gets in and I\u2019ll be waiting there for you on the platform; don\u2019t laugh if I have a bunch of lisianthus in my hand, for you I want to be the most gallant man in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A beach of fine white sand in Puglia?
