{"id":33828,"date":"2018-09-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-14T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/taranto-the-city-of-the-two-seas\/"},"modified":"2018-12-18T21:28:01","modified_gmt":"2018-12-18T20:28:01","slug":"taranto-the-city-of-the-two-seas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trullionline.com\/en\/taranto-the-city-of-the-two-seas\/","title":{"rendered":"Taranto the city of the two seas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Posted by the staff of TrulliOnline<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taranto <\/strong>is one of the <strong>richest cities in Puglia in terms of history and natural biodiversity<\/strong>.<strong> The city itself <\/strong>lies on the <strong>Ionian Sea<\/strong> and is known as the &#8220;<strong>City of the Two Seas<\/strong>&#8221; due to its geographical position straddling two stretches of water: the <strong>Mar Grande<\/strong> and <strong>Mar Piccolo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Mar Grande <\/strong>is separated from the <strong>Mar Piccolo <\/strong>by a canal crossed by a swing bridge. In the Mar Piccolo, divided into two basins, there are <strong>underwater springs known as <em>Citri<\/em><\/strong>, which pump a mixture of fresh and brackish water into the harbour, thus creating ideal hydro-biological conditions for shellfish, including Taranto\u2019s famous <strong><em>cozze nere<\/em><\/strong>, the mussels served in restaurants throughout the town.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Your first stop in Taranto, though, is the old city, with its reminders of the <strong>Greeks<\/strong>, <strong>Romans<\/strong>, <strong>Normans<\/strong>, <strong>Saracens <\/strong>and <strong>Spaniards<\/strong> who landed here in different eras, building a city of great splendour, as can be seen at <strong>MArTA<\/strong>, the prized <strong>National Archaeological Museum<\/strong>, where exhibits include the famous gold pre-Roman jewellery known as the <strong>Ori<\/strong> <strong>di Taranto <\/strong>as well as some outstanding <strong>mosaics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can take a stroll along the main street of the city centre, and go <strong>shopping<\/strong> along streets beneath the branches of orange trees, bearing fruit even in summer. They are a wonderful sight among the modern apartment blocks, alternating with <strong>Littorio<\/strong> style buildings. Or else, you can have a refreshing walk along the seafront, or <strong>read a good book <\/strong>sitting on a bench in the terraced gardens, divided up into colourful flower beds overlooking the sea, brightening up the city throughout the day; this is also one of the finest places to enjoy the spectacular sunset.<\/p>\n<p>One of Taranto\u2019s unique features is the <strong>swing bridge<\/strong> between the island of <strong>Borgo Antico<\/strong> and the peninsula of <strong>Borgo Nuovo<\/strong>. Originally an arched bridge made out of wood and iron, it has now been replaced by two arms that swing open, allowing ships to pass through.<\/p>\n<p>Next to it, the imposing <strong>Aragonese Castle<\/strong> was built on the site of a <strong>Byzantine Fortress<\/strong>, which was subsequently enlarged during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period. Today it is occupied by the <strong>Italian Navy<\/strong> which provides guided tours of the interior held by cadets.<\/p>\n<p>The beautiful <strong>Cathedral of San Cataldo<\/strong>, the oldest cathedral in Apulia, was built in the tenth century and combines Byzantine, medieval and Baroque architectural features.<\/p>\n<p>Taranto also houses the amazing Spartan underground museum known as <strong>Ipogeo Bellacicco<\/strong>, in the chambers below <strong>Palazzo de Beaumont Bonelli<\/strong>, which documents the historical periods all the way from the foundation of the city by the Spartans (8th century BC) until the 17th century. You can also take a look at the <strong>fossil remains of mussels<\/strong> set in the limestone rock.<\/p>\n<p>After visiting the city, the <strong>beach at San Vito<\/strong> is a great place to unwind, have a swim and sit back in one of the restaurants and bars overlooking the sea.\u00a0 Other beautiful beaches are just a few kilometers away: <strong>San Pietro in Bevagna<\/strong> near <strong>Manduria<\/strong>, with its <strong>stunning dunes<\/strong> and <strong>white sands<\/strong>, and <strong>Punta Prosciutto<\/strong>, further south, famous for its crystalline waters.<\/p>\n<p>Nature lovers also know Taranto as a \u201c<strong>dolphin paradise<\/strong>&#8220;, due to the large population of cetaceans to be found off the <strong>Cheradi Islands<\/strong>, which are easy to spot on one of the exciting boat tours held by the Jonian Dolphin Conservation.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted by the staff of TrulliOnline Taranto is one of the richest cities in Puglia in terms of history and &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":116,"featured_media":33816,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[131],"tags":[184],"class_list":["post-33828","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destinations-and-itineraries","tag-taranto-en","breadcrumb","wpautop"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<title>Taranto the city of the two seas -
